The New Fortress is found on the north-west side of the city of Corfu and is enclosed by Venizelos, Solomos and Vlaikos streets. Its construction began during the Venetian era on the hill of Agios Markos. At the same time, in 1957, the fortification of the city had also started. The construction was completed in 1588. The fortress is built in two levels. The lower level was constructed to protect the harbour while the upper level was constructed to protect the south and west part of the city. At the center of the upper level, is the imposing building of the English troops, constructed in 1843 which had high velocity canons. At the same level is you can also find the “kambana” (bell).
